VIEW EXHIBITION

New York – 57W57 ARTS is pleased to announce an exhibition in its main gallery pairing the work of abstract painters Paul Feeley, Poul Gernes and Ron Gorchov with the modern chair designs of Marc Held, Guy de Rougemont and Henry Glass/Jessica Reaves. Reflecting on Rothko’s concept that a proper viewing distance will inspire the transcendent experience of painting, the works in this exhibition are presented in specific relation to one another, creating a reciprocal space for quiet rumination.

The paintings of Ron Gorchov (American, 1930), Paul Feeley (American, 1910-1966), and Poul Gernes (Danish, 1926-1996) share a rich, visual language of color and form. Included in the exhibition are Gorchov’s 1976 curved surface painting Lure II; Feeley’s Untitled 1962 oil-based enamel on canvas; and Gernes’ 1967 painting Untitled (Tic Tac Toe).

While observing each painting, the viewer is invited to sit and experience each of the three masterfully designed chairs positioned throughout the space. Marc Held’s Culbuto Rocking Chair, made of upholstered black leather and white fiberglass, was designed for Knoll circa 1967. That same year, French-born artist Guy de Rougemont produced his strikingly colorful, high-backed chair made of lacquered PVC. Specially commissioned for the gallery, Jessi Reaves’ Stained Glass Chair (2015) merges her signature materials of foam, cotton and glass beads with an existing wood base created by mid-century designer Henry Glass.
