NEW YORK – 57W57Arts is pleased to bring together four artists whose work oscillates between the readily familiar and the stirringly surreal. There will be an opening reception on Thursday, May 2nd and the exhibitions will be on view to the public through June 7th.
Under the curation of Andy George Robertson, the gallery’s Waiting Room and Project Space will feature paintings by Ed Robertson, Andy’s father and frequent collaborator. On view are recent paintings alongside smaller canvases set in handmade, wood frames, some of which date back to the 1970’s. Ed Robertson’s vibrant landscapes take on a visual and conceptual twist as he paints into these pastoral scenes the temporary outdoor sculptures of his son Andy. One of Andy’s freestanding, mixed media-based sculptures will be exhibited in the Project Space.
The work of Ellon Gibbs, a talented emerging artist, will be presented in Melanie’s Office. On view will be a selection of his ink on paper drawings and a group of recent paintings.
Featured in Al’s Office, is Lounge #1, the first lounge chair design by Chris Rucker. This dynamic pair is made from zipsystem exterior sheathing and the cushions are made out of moving blankets. Rucker graduated with a degree in sculpture from the University of Connecticut in Storrs. Since 1996 he has been working in design & build in New York City, currently with the firm AR&DEE, located in Brooklyn.
