NEW YORK – 57W57Arts is pleased to present two painting exhibitions featuring new works by Ben K. Voss in the Waiting Room, and Robert Erickson in the Project Space. A publication in collaboration with both artists will accompany their exhibitions. There will be an opening reception on Thursday, Sept. 6th, and the exhibitions will be on view to the public through October 12th.

Ben K. Voss will present 10 acrylic paintings all completed in 2018. These small-scale works pack an unexpectedly powerful punch, where their neatly diminutive size pulls the viewer in for close inspection and once engaged, some delightful little worlds begin to open up. Voss’s imagery and deft brushstrokes result in works that skillfully embody a dual hand-crafted/graphic design quality. Soft, repetitive patterns climb across each canvas forming subtle glitches and abstract terrains.

Ben K. Voss was born in 1980 in Sinking Spring, Pennsylvania. Voss’s work has been included in group exhibitions at the Aspen Art Museum, Geoffrey Young Gallery, Interstate Projects, the Spring Break Art Show and Andrew Edlin's Underground Space. The artist currently lives and works in New York.

In the gallery’s newly renovated Project Space, Robert Erickson will present a selection of works from his sublime painting series that incorporates ink suspended in polyester stretched over frames of reclaimed wood. This work was developed out of an exercise which evolved by way of extracting and re-purposing various materials used in Erickson’s day job as a screen printer. The artist has found that staring at these shop materials in concert with the perpetual movements of the machines results in a trance-like state. Erickson states that this deepened sense of scrutiny has permitted an access point to exploring painting as both process and object. The resulting works are ethereal and contemplative, suffused with an almost hypnotic radiance.

Robert Erickson was born in 1972 in Newark, Delaware. He has exhibited throughout the United States over the last 20 years. Recent group exhibitions include: Museum of Contemporary Art – Tucson, Arizona; 57w57Arts, New York, NY; Dropped Frames - curated by JPW3, Elk Gallery, New York, NY; Accident Blackspot- curated by Jim Lee, Freight & Volume, New York, NY; Accident Blackspot, Markus Winter Gallery, Berlin, Germany; The Lurking Hole Gallery, Nottingham, UK. Robert received a BFA from the University of Delaware in 1997 and he currently lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.
