RUPERT HARTLEY | OUTFIELDS

October 30 - December 16, 2022

VIEW EXHIBITION

In his recent work Rupert Hartley focuses on colour grids and the repeated gesture. Using his studio as a hands on production space he explores paintings process and materials describing his recent work as ‘painted grounds, meditations on his local environment and art histories, a repurposing of colour and found materials’. OUTFIELDS presents a group of works from the larger Outro series, a series made by repeatedly painting out coloured squares in unplanned sequences, made through an attempt to exhaust remaining studio colour and cardboard pieces in his studio space. He sees them as open riffs and colour fields, as pauses, as limits and endings, as residues of materials.

Rupert Hartley is a visual artist living and working in Hove, East Sussex, UK. Trained originally in printed textile design at the Glasgow School of Art he later studied an MA Art in Architecture at University of East London. His work has evolved through various media and contexts focusing on painting in recent years. He has exhibited both nationally and internationally upcoming and recent exhibitions including: MINIM:AL at ICOON Museum, Holland, Niagra Falls Projects: Returns, Gallery Dodo, Brighton UK, BINARY, Terrace Gallery, London, This Year’s Model, Studio 1.1 Gallery, London and Wells Art Contemporary, Wells Cathedral, Somerset.
