ROSAIRE APPEL | visual books

September 30  - October 21, 2016

Opening Reception: Friday, Sept. 30, 6-9pm

NEW YORK - 57W57ARTS is pleased to present a collection of visual books by Rosaire Appel. Displayed in the gallery’s Back Room exhibition space, the selected books will feature one-of-a-kind covers that embody the artist’s industrious exploration of graphic/nonverbal languages through abstract digital imagery. There will be a reception for the artist on Friday, September 30th, 6-9pm, and the works will be accessible to the viewing audience through October 21st.

“As a digital artist/ photographer/ writer I’ve consistently gravitated toward the book form - as container, receptacle – and for the way the book-form distributes content over time, rather than in one fell swoop. The time element - duration – which allows content to grow and cross pollinate, is particularly useful to my way of working – a gradual expansion of a theme, variations and branches. I’ve also been drawn to the book form for the practicalities of portability, and for the intimate nature of a handheld object, the singularity of reading, individual rather than public viewing. As for content, I tread the flexible boundary of suggestion between familiar and abstraction.” RA

Rosaire Appel’s work has been shown in several exhibition spaces including The Center for Book Arts, Schema Projects, The International Print Center, Proteus Gowanus Gallery and the Museum of Modern Art. A selection of her books can be viewed at Printed Matter – NYC and a series of her Limited Edition works are available at Central Booking Gallery in New York. Several online and print publications have featured Appel’s work including Faultline, The Diagram, the Concrete Comic Anthology, Sleepingfish, and Arthur Magazine.
